May 9th Update

Greetings from Scott Hein

I am about to celebrate another birthday this week—this after a few days back in the hospital last week for a few minor problems. I was admitted back in the hospital with a slight temperature, 101.4, and a low level of blood. After a few days there I was released with 4 new units of blood, and no fever, although I did have the hiccups, which I continue to have. Regardless, it is sure good to be back home once again. We have great homestead.

It looks like I will miss celebrating my birthday with my elder grand-daughter, Avery, whom I share my birth date with. She will turn 11 this year, and we will have to wait until the end of the month to celebrate together, something that we have avoided up until now. I will miss seeing her this birthday, but we will make up for it later.

I am planning to teach our doctoral seminar in financial markets in the fall, which is requiring some work now to get the syllabus ready. So, I go in the office for a couple of hours each day. It feels good to get back in the swing of things.

I am also going to “hood” 2 of my doctoral students in a little over a week. I am proud of Abrar and Josh in completing their Ph.D. requirements.—Best of luck to each in the future.

The journey continues in new unexpected directions. Keep in touch.

Glad to hear your back home and getting back into life! I hope things just continue to keep getting better for you and your family. Hugs-Ann

Post Surgery Thoughts from Scott

If you have been keeping up with Tracey and Jocelyn’s posts, you know the journey took a sharp turn with the removal of the large tumor I had and my left kidney. I am blessed by all the help and support that allowed this new path on the journey. It has indeed been a tough path to take, but one that will hopefully allow me to continue my future travels, espceially with the ones I love.

I greatly appreciate all the thoughts and prayers provided by friends and family. I firmly believe that they have helped on this journey.

I am slowly regaining my physical strength and the mending of the body. Every day I seem to be a little stronger. I am hoping to be able to return to my teaching in the fall. This has long been my calling and I find it most enjoyable. In the meantime, I seek to continue to gain my strength. With the help of my wife, Ellen, most especially, but also my girls and family, I am confident that I will make it.

In the meantime, I have appointments next week in Houston to see my care giving friends at MD Anderson and many caregiviers there. I am looking forward to these visits and will keep you posted on what we learn and decide.

Great to have you back and posting personally-that seems like a very good sign! Your kids did a nice job of keeping things up-to-date…they seem like excellent people. I’ll bet you’re proud of them. And congratulations on the surgery. Being to have able to have the cancer fully removed is a big step in the right direction. Keep us posted on how things are going-Ann
